The interviews in District 9 screams “viral marketing“. They could have released interviews sporadically on Youtube, Hulu and Flickr with the keywords “aliens” and “real“. I have no doubt posting these snipit interviews from the trailer would have had the same effect that The Blair Witch Project had in 1999. It is a shame they didn’t use the brilliantly shot interviews to create a short, but effective buzz prior to the release of the full trailer.
This is especially true cosidering the District 9 website tries to create the image that District 9 is a real place. I think they missed a huge opportunity. Agree of disagree?

Most definitely. And now it may be too late since the trailer will get out and ruin the opportunity. I really liked the work that was done for Know Your C. That was really well done… I waited for any knew clues as to what that was… D-9 may still have a chance, but they should have started a year ago.

YES! Having a past in the media marketing I think you hit the nail on the head! There is NO reason why they couldnt have used the footage to create a fun little campaign, especially on the heels of the ooverblown swine flu terror. So silly……….they missed the boat man. Great point and fabulous blog. Keep doing that you are doing.
